DCC RPG/Xcrawl Free RPG Day 2014

This year’s Free RPG Day release from Goodman Games has two great adventures inside:

For DCC RPG, this year’s module features Elzemon and the Blood-Drinking Box, a level 1 adventure by Terry Olson. Seeking the favor of a powerful wizard, the party agrees to steal an artifact from a rival’s sanctum. The wizard requires, however, that PCs “feed” the artifact lawful blood to imprison its contents!

For Maximum Xcrawl, this year’s module features Dungeon Detonation, a level 6-8 adventure (Division II, full lethal) by Brendan LaSalle. Tis another ultra fun challenge designed to make your players cry for mercy and laugh out loud in the same breath! Strap on your armor, cue your theme music, call your agent, and tell them to arrange you a date for the Grammies. It’s time for victory and your own line of action figures… or death. Or worse: calling your old boss and seeing if they still need someone to work lunch shift at the expo.

Make sure to visit the Goodman Games web site to download free pregens for both adventures!

Free RPG Day is an annual event when publishers provide free products to gaming stores. It's a way to support brick and mortar retail stores. It was on June 21. These products are usually snapped up pretty quickly. Goodman Games has provided you with a way to own this cool adventure if you missed out. I promise they're going for more on ebay.

Them going for more on ebay makes it OK to charge for this PDF-the print version of which was handed out for free-in what way? What additional cost does Goodman incur to justify this?

I love DCC and have given quite a bit of my money to Goodman, but this feels like money grubbery.

It was free on FreeRPG day. I got a print copy at a local shop because I attended the event. I guess it's just fair if Goodman Games makes some money on the module after printing thousands and distributing them for free.

The way it works is: You missed it the first time, tough luck. It's limited edition and if you want it later, you pay. Or you pay more on EBay. Goodman isn't a "corporation," they're regular guys working rem home and hoping to make rent. And their games are plenty cheap for what you get.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
