Etruscan

Before the Romans there were the Etruscans, who wrote a still-unknown language in an alphabet that was the ancestor of our own. Many of the things we think of as disctincively Roman originated with the Etruscans. In a game context, the Etruscan alphabet is perfect for any sorts of old writing or inscriptions in ruins that the players should almost, but not quite, be able to read. The Etruscan alphabet is composed almost entirely of straight lines, in a very runic style, so it would be perfect for any civilization that might otherwise use the more common runes.

The Etruscan package contains two fonts:

sample of EtruscanEtruscan, an authentic ancient Etruscan script, including the signs to produce the Roman-numeral-like Etruscan numbers. It includes a normal form, a heavy form, an outlined form, and a weathered form, suitable for all your ancient inscription needs. As Etruscan was originally written right to left, as were many of the ancient scripts in the Mediterranean area, you can use TextJiggler to reverse a line of text for greater authenticity.

Zichner exampleZichner, like similar fonts in some of Wintertree's other packages, is the familiar Roman alphabet using Etruscan letters, plus additional letters and symbols produced in the same style. It is excellent for handouts for the players whose characters can read the language the others are baffled at -- give those others something in Etruscan and those in the know the same thing in Zichner. It includes the same forms as Etrruscan, and a full alphabet with all numbers and punctuation besides.

The package also includes documentation with the history of the Etruscan alphabet, suggested game uses, and a character map.

For those who have wondered what the "weathered" versions look like, here is an example of the weathred (bold italic) face in Zichner:

Weathered font

"Zichner", by the way, is intended to mean something like "letters" in Etruscan. The root is right, but the exact meaning is a bit questionable and the plural ending may require a different vowel.

FONT LICENSE INFORMATION: Wintertree fonts are licensed as ordinary commerical fonts. This means you can install the font on your computer to use with programs such as word processors, design tools and similar applications, and use it for creation of print or PDF documents, images (JPEG, TIFF, PNG, etc.) and logos. In other words, you can use the Wintertree fonts to make things with and sell the things you make, but you can't sell the font itself in any way, or use it as a web font (@font-face). Credit is gratefully appreciated but not required.

Ahem...Etruscan is NOT "still unknown." I took an Etruscan language class in college over 20 years ago. There isn't much surviving literature, but there are lots of inscriptions and scholars can decipher >95% of them. If you are interested, you can pick up an Etruscan dictionary on most online book stores. I recommend any of the ones written by Bonfante (either of them) or Pittau.

This does look like a lovely font, though.

*scurries off to Amazon and ABEbooks*

"The Etruscan Language," and also "Etruscan Myths," and "Etruscan Life and Afterlife," are on their way. I couldn't find anything by Massimo Pittau in English, and I can't really read Italian, at least not more than enough to see he seems to be a linguist and the books are ones I'd love to be able to read.

Yes, I'm very easily induced to buy books on ancient civilizations.

Which, I suppose, shouldn't surprise anyone who's seen what I do with fonts. Or my bookshelves. It appears that I need to update the font documentation, too; I provide some historical background on each font, and I'm obviously out of date on what I know of the Etruscans.

And thank you for the kind words for the font. It's one of my favorites.

Update: The Etruscan Language just arrived from Amazon. I know what I'll be reading during slow times at the booth this weekend. (Treklanta)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
