Adventure Locations: Ice Tomb of the Dwarf Lord

Excellent small adventure location ideal for use in a frosty environment. By NOT populating the site fully with monsters but rather leaving suggestions for where monsters might be, as well as providing stats for environmental hazards this product can be easily tailored to fit your group - personally I plan on using it with the Conan RPG, it strikes me as the kind of place Conan would have found.

LIKED: Good presentation, nice graphics, and another e-tile - excellent. Good value for money.

DISLIKED: Getting a coupon from Ed AFTER I'd already bought it....

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
e-Adventure Tiles: Tomb of the Dwarf Lord

by Robert R. [Verified Purchaser]

Another very nice example of the 'smaller' sets from SKG, this one is a departure in that it is really a five tile set (six with the bonus) but it includes two versions of each tile - one with the tomb at it's prime, with lit torches etc, and the other with all the torches burned out and most of the tombs busted open with cracked and broken tops. Nice use of the angular 'dwarven' architecture that fits in with the earlier dwarven set from SKG, the Halls Of The Dwarf Lord.

It will be interesting to see what the response is to the slightly increased price point for the benefit of the 'damaged' tiles.

LIKED: Excellent graphics as always. Good presentation reflecting typical dwarven architecture.

DISLIKED: Given that this is as already mentioned really a set of 5 tiles presented in two 'conditions' it might be a little on the expensive side for what it is....not much, but maybe a little.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Satisfied
Just incredible - fantastic use of the excellent Ice Base and Ice Cave tile sets from Skeleton Key, this set presents d20F stats and plot hooks for a hollowed out asteroid base, complete with fighters and a larger, escort class ship complete with it's own 'counter' (the damm thing is about a foot across and fits in the hangar bay!) as well as stats and floorplans.

LIKED: Good base layout, nice stats, good plot hooks. Another very nice starship design from RA; this one is an ass-kicker through and through. Of particular interest to me were the text pieces on starships vs planets and characters that make an interesting essay on how one starship can potentially take over an entire planet with relative ease UNLESS another starship gets involved. The rules and discussion on Infantry Robots were also well done, and the deck plan was as usual excellent. The two new e-tiles were a useful addition and added some variety to the mix, something previous deckplans have not necessarily been noted for doing.

LIKED: New tiles, heavily armed ship, good text content. Price point as always excellent.

DISLIKED: Nothing really.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
A fun and interesting adventure to read, I look forward to inflicting this one on my players. Some nice twists that will be interesting to play out, and an evocative setting make this an intriguing prospect.

LIKED: Style and plot of adventure, great retro-style (yet still pleasingly done) artwork and layout; loved the inclusion of a less ink-intensive version of one of the maps, please keep this up GMG! Looking forward to Crypt Of The Devil Lich when that is eventually ready!

DISLIKED: Nothing, it was all good - like all the previous Dungeon Crawls.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
I liked this more than the prior Prehistoric North American one; it's actually refreshing to see real, contemporary animals receive the same amount of detail as their fantastic cousins. Graphics are extremely good, the size comparison silhouettes are especially useful and should be included in ALL future monster books as a highly useful reference.

LIKED: Informative, interesting text and stats; great graphics.

DISLIKED: It's not an e-tile set....

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Incredible! Ed does it again; this is an awesome set chock full of all the detailed clarity we've come to expect from Skeleton Key, and despite the set being 45 tiles in size I would be hard pressed to identify a single tile I could call 'wasted space'. When combined with the basic Ice Caves set the possibilities are enormous - Hoth 'Echo Base' here I come! Just make sure you have plenty of blue toner.....

LIKED: Great use of colour and attention to detail; compatability with previous sets.

DISLIKED: Nothing - an awesome set, well worth the wait.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Tilez - Sci-Fi
Publisher: UKG Publishing
by Robert R. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 10/28/2004 00:00:00

Well, unlike the previous comment left I personally thought this was a superb set and it was considerably more impressive than I had expected (not that I had expected it would be poor, more that it gave much more than what I had anticipated). What you get is pretty much what it says, 25 different sheets of floor tiles - think back to the old days of GW's Dungeon Floor Tiles series where you cut out the tiles to the shape of the room you wanted and you're on the right track. The tiles are all different; some are rusted out floor, some are riveted deck plating, some even look carpeted - this was what I was expecting, and I would have left good feedback based on that alone. What pushes this into the five star category is that for EACH and EVERY floor type, you get a matching sheet of accessories, with the appropriate floor backing each item.

I don't view this as unnecessary duplication, I view this as above and beyond what other folks have done, which is have the floor plans, then have a single sheet of the decoration items either with a neutral floor colour or with no background at all so you have to cut them out exactly. Not so with this set - choose the floor type and you have a full set of accessories that match that floor. Excellent.

LIKED: For the price point this is incredible value. I mean really, what do people expect for $2.50?? A highly useful and good looking set of generic floor plans ready to be tailored to your specific needs.

DISLIKED: Nothing.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Future: Starship 8 -- The Magellan
Publisher: Ronin Arts
by Robert R. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 10/21/2004 00:00:00

Even moreso than the Cronkite, the Magellan is an example of an asymmetrical starship that has no need of aerodynamics to enter a planet's atmosphere itself except in dire circumstances - and why would it, with all the science drones, hover trucks and shuttlecraft it has available.

After a hiccup (imho) with the starfighter set, Ronin Arts have come back swinging with this and the Cronkite being EXCELLENT examples of practical ship design, nicely laid out deck plans and stats, and both are brimming with adventure potential. I love this design, it's just so practical and has a realistic feel to it. All we need now is a bigger ship that utilises the elevators from Star Command to have multiple decks :)

LIKED: Great design, good adventure potential, another free e-tile.

DISLIKED: Nothing.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
e-Adventure Tiles: Flooded Dungeons
Publisher: SkeletonKey Games
by Robert R. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 10/20/2004 00:00:00

Another unusual subject for a set of tiles, this one is right up there with the Iron Dungeons set for being limited to specialist uses in a campaign, which has affected my rating - I'm simply not really sure where I would use this. The transition tiles are a huge help in this regard, in fact scanning over the product again I can see a few ideas forming as to what I could do with this, especially if I treat the tiles as only being a couple of feet deep in water as opposed to completely submerged. Time to take another look at the Lost Temple set I think :)

LIKED: Usual crisp graphics, and the water effect is incredible - these floors really look wet. Excellent range of transition tiles vastly improve the versatility of the set.

DISLIKED: Perhaps of limited use in most campaigns, I think you'd have to have a specific concept in mind when designing your own dungeon to use these. As general-purpose tiles their usefulness will be less.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Satisfied
When I use the flooded tiles in my games (I have made extensive use of the Flooded Caves) I usually set the depth at around three feet. This causes inconvenience for medium sized characters and some real difficulty for small characters. Thanks for the great comments. Ed Bourelle SkeletonKey Games

Another great set of starship tiles, there are some unusual ones in this set that greatly expand the possibilities offered by combining previous sets in the series - which already had a huge number of options before this! Keep a careful eye on the orientation of the deck plates, some of these tiles are intended to attach to each other where you might not expect...

LIKED: The standard ultra-crisp graphics and versatility of this set make it a winner in my book.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
TCCF-5 Terra Class Freighter
Publisher: UKG Publishing
by Robert R. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 10/18/2004 00:00:00

An excellent set of plans; I'm extremely glad to see that John has listened to all the comments and criticisms regarding UKGs starship deck plans to date and produced a new set that addresses virtually all the problems I (and others) have had so far.

Firstly, the deck plans themselves are now considerably lightened up graphically - the floor tiles are now a textured light grey not too dissimilar to another publishers, and the various elements on top are now more pleasingly coloured ie the seats are a (toned down, not garish) red-orange in colour that contrasts with the floor. In addition to this, each section is now 'complete' on a page (ie rooms attached to each other are now contiguous and not broken up into individual rooms as previously) and make printing and assembling the ship much easier.

Onto the file containing the ship stats, again this is a marked improvement on previous releases, mainly everything has again been lightened from the darkness that prevaded prior releases. The cover background is much lighter which allows you to see the ship itself on the front as it goes from 'real ship' to '3D-schematic'; the 3 pictures of the ship in action are VERY nice, clear and crisp and with excellent backgrounds. The ship overview and keyed deckplan are similarly easily viewed and look great.

The ship itself is a pretty huge freighter consisting of a forward crew section (with three decks), a central spine to which cargo pods are attached (each pod has three floors itself and come in a number of different configurations) and finally an engineering section at the back that again has several decks, one of which is a gantry of sorts - this comes displayed as (1) the ground floor section, (2) the gantry, and (3) the ground floor with the gantry overlaid - good call, John.

Overall, if you've been put off UKG material previously by comments regarding the darkness of the deckplans or pictures (some of which were left by myself) then give this set a chance - you won't regret it. An EXCELLENT set, I for one now look forward with anticipation to future releases in this format.

LIKED: Greatly improved graphic quality, well constructed deckplans, a very useful ship at a good price.

DISLIKED: Pretty much every point I didn't like about previous releases in this series have been addressed - in short, there wasn't really anything I disliked this time around :)

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Very useful product that ties in with the Starships 1 set of deckplans also from UKG, this has some good stats and adventure hooks and when used with the full deckplan set has awesome potential for SF gaming on a large military starship. The usefulness of the product increases exponentially if you have the deck plans in Starships 1 but is still worth a look even if you don't for $1.50, and it might spur you on to check out the larger-scaled deckplan sets.

LIKED: The decks are 'realistically' stacked on top of each other with the engines at the bottom to provide gravity - I love this. Fantastic price point, can't be beat.

DISLIKED: Graphics in the illustrations are still extremely dark; the numbers on the deck plan key are very large, to the point of obscuring the deck plan detail.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Another interesting and well thought out starship design from RA, this is a great example of a way to get your PCs into the action in an unconventional way, aboard an unconventional starship. The adventure hooks are great, the ship design is delightfully asymmetrical, the deckplan and silhouettes are well done as usual. Nice to see this series back on form after the small blip that was the 'duo of fighters' set.

LIKED: Fun ship design using components from the e-tiles sets in an interesting way ie the side mounted 'bridge' from the Star Command set of tiles is not used as the bridge (that's a one-man affair at the front of the ship) but as a news studio. Always good to get extra e-tiles, and the counter sets are a great bonus.

DISLIKED: Nothing - all round nice product.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
