Wow! Talk about a lot of gaming goodness crammed into a small package for your money! Maps, rituals, an adventure, powers, new creatures, its all here! Nice layout and presentation, good size print text for easy reading. Definitely worth checking out, and I bet you will continue to return for more! I got mine at my LGS for $2, and used the coupon code inside to get this PDF for free. Definitely the best deal I have seen in a long time! I'm certainly looking forward to seeing more!

The first issue of "Level Up," Goodman Games's new 4e magazine, hit your friendly local game store and RPGNow recently. Goodman seems to have several secondary goals with this product: to fill the gap in printed D&D magazines left by the repackaging of Dragon and Dungeon as PDF-only products, to get people physically into brick-and-mortar game stores, and to increase exposure for Goodman Games products. Above all, though, Level Up #1 gives you about 48 pages' worth of well-designed 4e content.

The Good: Pretty much everything about Level Up #1 sets a great example of what short 4e supplements should offer. If you've been around this hobby for a while, you've come to expect excellence from Goodman Games, and Level Up #1 delivers.

The Bad: Well, there's a lot of advertising, but that's not so bad.

The Ugly: The cover artwork is skillfully executed, but not family-friendly. "Azagar's Advice for Adventurers" delivers good content, but it's so profane that I wouldn't want my elven-year-old son to read it. Power descriptions are set in shades of gray, making it hard to distinguish at-will, encounter, and daily powers at a glance.

Content is quite good. However, 4 bucks for B&W magazine? No color? Powers are unnoticed in B&W. Could you make Level Up coloured in PDF, please? Dungeon adn Dragon is much better. I'll give it a try and I'll buy one more issue. However, I'm not gonna continue buying if it will be still B&W.

The magazine comes in a robust 60 pages. That is not as big as their major competitor, but it is very, very, full. The initial editorial lays out all of the article types that the magazine plans to pursue in the coming quarters and every one seems interesting and with a constant mind toward having something for all players. There was always an eye toward having both solid fluff (flavor) and rules (crunch) in each article. More over, a focus on making sure the flavor and crunch aligned. Readers will notice if there is a disconnect and will be turned off by a product that does a bad job of aligning these two very important aspects of game design. That is not the case here.

The articles are similar to classic articles we, as a gaming generation, have all grown up with. There are articles that detail new weapons and talk about the fighters that use them, articles that introduce a new god, his followers and other important doctrines of the faith. In short, once again, Aeryn “Blackdirge” Rudel is walking a fine line between classic nostalgia that invokes feelings in old timers and easy grokkability for newcomers. In this issue, Rudel as the editor, succeeds admirably in this quest.

Upsides • Robust and full of both fluff and crunch • Material easily grokkable and usable in any homebrew game • Captures the feel of classic gaming magazines of the 80’s while still being modern and easy for newer players to use

Downsides • The black and white interior makes powers hard to recognize • Some templating and power issues in rules design.
