War Hammer FRG with a twist and a d100 system. Solid work.

More options than Warhammer (of which it began as a fan update), and a slightly different flavour. But less overall detail and clunkier execution. Lots of good ideas. Just not great execution.

Daniel Fox asked me if I'd submit a review for this, and so I shall, even though I haven't written a review for anything in many years :)

A strong love letter to WFRP, though setting-free, it still holds many elements from the world of Warhammer, most of them strongly referenced.

Straight-forward, and quite streamlined, and for the most part well put together and written. Yes, there are a few gappy moments, but some of this is due to editing, as in the removal of unwanted ideas, whose absence left slight holes, and the rest I suspect will be cleared up in supplements, such as NPCs, further detailing on playing as the monsters races (Orx, Grendel, etc.), and so on.

Combat is intuitive and quite visceral, and does make you feel every player should wear at least some armour, so as to avoid the dreaded bleeding mechanic, which will have the average PC dead in 4 or 5 turns. It really makes you want to find other solutions than wading head first into a fray, which is a nice change of pace.

The professions are very nicely done, in my opinion, and most pay homage or reference to one thing or another from popular culture, such as the Smuggler's trait, "Häns shot first", or the Dungeoneer's "Gygaxian Naturalism".

The magic system is for the most part very good, and low-powered, which is to be expected in a grimdark environment. I suspect some people will find the method for procuring new spells to be a bit faffy, though.

My only real niggles as some slightly bad wording in places, a few gaps, and the fact that there aren't separate profession, upbringing, and class, charts for the different races. Doesn't feel right that not only can every race be every profession, but that they have an equal chance of each as well, but that may just be me.

Oh, and some people might have a profession balance issue, as some profession are significantly better than other to be. Does this add realism? Probably, but some people wont be happy about it.

To cut this very short, if you enjoyed WFRP, if you like a more "realistic" fantasy environment, and if you want to play a less fighty game, this might be something you'd want to take a look at.

The book is an outstanding example of dedication and passion. I prise the author for it.

Reading trough it, though, I've found the overall system to be a bit weak and undecided on what it want to be: new wave or old style. It claims to be an update of the old WFRP, yet I've found lots of added systems and mechanics that should incentivate the roleplaying (like burning reputation for favours). These are cool, but a bit too simplified and underdeveloped.

Rules like madness are there, but lack the flavour and didn't catch my immagination. The character profiles are not as immidiate as it seems at first glance.

I found combat really under-developed, and quite a step back from WFRP 1st/2nd. Injuries in threshold is quite simplified. No more hit locations and by-the-piece armours. Weapons seems a bit missing something. The infamous critical tables mainly trainslate in three tables (divided by weapon type) describing gory details of when a foe is slain. The actual critical tables are much less flavourful and not divided by weapon type. The addition of "Perilous stuns": why should a disarm fall in such a thing? Seems a pure gamist choice, and brake the flow of something gritty and realistic. Again, I see a bit of contraddiction on what the system wants to be.

Book organization is a bit confusing First chapters are so full of text and "narrative" that it seemed to me to have read a long time before reaching interesting stuff. Other examples are Critical tables are on the GM chapter, not combat.

The games seems that wants to be a bit of everything but, personally, I think fall a bit short: is not a new wave RPG nor an actual WFRP facelift. I think is more than a decent game but, if I have to regard it as a WFRP spiritual successer, I'm not convinced.

Thanks for the review. Somply put: this game isn't for everyone. It is by design an exceptions-based RPG in the vein of Fantasy Flight's Rogue Trader and WFRP 40k. However, the vast majority of our playtesters, supporters on Kickstarter and forum-goers disagree with your sentiment that this isn't a spiritual successor to Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. I would encourage you to run the playtest adventure "A Bitter Harvest" to understand the context of what we were aiming for. In motion, the game plays differently than you would infer from a breeze-through of the PDF. As a correction, hit locations and piecemeal armor options are in the GM's section, as are distinct weapon damage values. You'll also find that critical hits are by weapon type.

Interesting update on the WF2E Ruleset, includes many favourite house rules and has very interesting setting information, I look forward to the full illustrated release!
